To say something hurts or that you have an ache, you can use avoir mal à (body part):
J’ai mal à la tête. I have a headache.
J’ai mal à l’estomac. I have a stomach ache.
Elle a mal au bras. Her arm hurts.
Tu as mal au genou? Your knee hurts?
Il a mal aux orteils. His toes hurt.
Faire mal (to hurt) plus the indirect pronoun.
Tu me fais mal. You’re hurting me.
Ne lui faites pas mal. Don’t hurt him / her.Note: the possessive adjective is never used with body parts in French. You can never say ‘my hand.’
Instead, the French use pronominal verbs to show possession with body parts:
Il s’est cassé la jambe – I broke my leg .
